Some printers also come with built in scanners (to digitize paper documents), fax machines, and photocopiers. Computer – This is the device that houses the “Guts” of your pc. Hardware items such as your monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and other components are often called hardware devices, or devices.

Basic Computer software Training: Computer software refers to the instructions, or computer programs, that provides instruction to computer hardware. A word processing program that you can use to write letters on your computer is a type of software. The Operating System that manages your computer and the devices connected to it. Two well known Computer Operating Systems are Windows and Mac OS. THE FIRST COMPUTER: ENIAC Introduced in 1946, ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first general-purpose electronic computer.The ENIAC  was built for the United States military to accurately calculate the direction of artillery shells. ENIAC was massive and weighed more than 60,000 pounds and filled a large size room. To process information, ENIAC used almost 20,000 tubes, each the size of a small light bulb. The tubes were very unreliable and burned out at an alarming rate. TYPES OF COMPUTERS: Computers can be very large or very small. There are super-computers At one end of the scale are supercomputers, very large computers with thousands of linked microprocessors that perform extremely complex calculations. Some computers are embedded in cars, TVs, stereo systems, calculators, and even household appliances. Each computer design is built to perform specific task and functions. Desktop or personal computers made to be used by one person at a time. Desktop computers are designed for use at a desk or table. They are generally larger and faster than other types of personal computers. Desktop computers are made up of separate components. The system unit is the major or main component in your computer system. Rectangular in shape it can sit on the desk or under. Other components include the keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor. Laptop computers are usually lightweight mobile PCs with an LCD display thin screen. They are sometimes called notebook computers because they can be used instead of a notebook with paper. Laptops can also operate on batteries, so you can take them anywhere you need to work. Unlike desktops, laptops are completely self-contained. The laptop folds and closes like a book. Handheld computers also called personal digital assistants (PDAs), are battery-powered computers like Blackberry’s. Handheld computers are not as fast as desktops or laptops, handhelds are handy for making appointments, keeping track of addresses and phone numbers, and playing games. Some handhelds have more advanced features, like making telephone calls or getting on the Internet. Instead of a keyboard, handheld computers or PDA’s have touch screens that you use with your finger or a stylus, which looks a lot like a pen without ink. Tablet Personal Computers: Tablet Personal Computers are mobile PCs that combine features of laptops and handhelds. Like laptop computers, Tablet computers are powerful, fast and have a screen like a tablet. Like handhelds, Tablets can allow you to make notes or draw pictures directly on the screen or desktop, usually with a tablet pen instead of a stylus. If you want to type a letter or report then you will be using word processing software like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works Suite. A suite is several software programs bundled together into a suite. Another type of software is accounting software like Microsoft Excel. Accounting software helps you use the computer to balance your checkbook, create accounting documents like spreadsheets and perform mathematical functions.

Presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint is used to present a proposal that includes text and images in a slide-show presentation. Microsoft Access is database software. Database software collects and reports on information you ask for. Database software allows you to input information and organize it to produce a report. The phone book is a database.

 Photo imaging software is used to view and print images from your digital camera. Scanners are also photo-imaging software. Scanners allow users to turn a photograph of letter into a digital file onto your computer. Sending an image or photo can be done with your email if you make the photo a digital file. These are parts of your basic computer skills which you should have known by now. Digital files are what your computer makes all files into.

Letters or documents are digital files until you print them, then they are hard copies. In addition to making documents, images and other hard copies into digital files your computer has a calculator, movie maker and player, sound recorder and more. When a hard copy is turned into a digital file, that file is put into a folder. You can make a folder on your computer screen or desktop with one right click of your mouse. The desktop on your computer is just like a filing cabinet in an office. In a filing cabinet you have folders and inside the folders you have files.

If you create a document and save it on your computer, you have created a digital file. Files go into folders. If you create a document like a letter to your attorney, you should create a folder on your desktop or in a folder on your desktop called “Legal Matters”. If you create a document about fashion, you should create a folder that is easy for you to remember. Am sure you already have enough basic computer training skills to do this? Right! If you write an article on your computer you must use word processing software like Microsoft Word. Before you save your article you should think about the name of the folder you will put the article in. Maybe you could make a folder on your desktop called “Articles”.  If you write a lot of articles you can make other folders inside your “Article Folder” you can have other folders.

When you have other folders inside main folders it is called nesting. You can create an “Article Folder” and have a “Political Folder, Wedding Articles Folder” what ever is easier to remember. If you call a folder what it is, it will be easier to remember. If you have a photograph of a cow, then maybe you should name the file cow. Photographs and documents have different extensions. Documents created with Microsoft Word carry the extension “.doc” and image files could be ”.jpeg, .tiff, .gif or bitmap and many more. When you name images and save them you must not use any spaces in the file name. Example would be “photoofme.jpg” not “photo of me”.

The reason we do not have spaces in the names of images or web documents is because not all Internet browsers can read spaces. Internet Explorer can read spaces in images but Netscape Navigator cannot. Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing software but other do exist.
