A computer is just a machine like a toaster or washing machine. Your computer can do nothing without you. The human brain is many times more powerful than a computer. Computer software is categorized according to the duties the software will perform for you.

If you want to type a letter or report then you will be using word processing software like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works Suite. A suite is several software programs bundled together into a suite. Another type of software is accounting software like Microsoft Excel. Accounting software helps you use the computer to balance your checkbook, create accounting documents like spreadsheets and perform mathematical functions.

Presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint is used to present a proposal that includes text and images in a slide-show presentation. Microsoft Access is database software. Database software collects and reports on information you ask for. Database software allows you to input information and organize it to produce a report. The phone book is a database.

 Photo imaging software is used to view and print images from your digital camera. Scanners are also photo-imaging software. Scanners allow users to turn a photograph of letter into a digital file onto your computer. Sending an image or photo can be done with your email if you make the photo a digital file. These are parts of your basic computer skills which you should have known by now. Digital files are what your computer makes all files into.

Letters or documents are digital files until you print them, then they are hard copies. In addition to making documents, images and other hard copies into digital files your computer has a calculator, movie maker and player, sound recorder and more. When a hard copy is turned into a digital file, that file is put into a folder. You can make a folder on your computer screen or desktop with one right click of your mouse. The desktop on your computer is just like a filing cabinet in an office. In a filing cabinet you have folders and inside the folders you have files.

If you create a document and save it on your computer, you have created a digital file. Files go into folders. If you create a document like a letter to your attorney, you should create a folder on your desktop or in a folder on your desktop called “Legal Matters”. If you create a document about fashion, you should create a folder that is easy for you to remember. Am sure you already have enough basic computer training skills to do this? Right! If you write an article on your computer you must use word processing software like Microsoft Word. Before you save your article you should think about the name of the folder you will put the article in. When you have other folders inside main folders it is called nesting. You can create an “Article Folder” and have a “Political Folder, Wedding Articles Folder” what ever is easier to remember. If you call a folder what it is, it will be easier to remember. If you have a photograph of a cow, then maybe you should name the file cow. Photographs and documents have different extensions. Documents created with Microsoft Word carry the extension “.doc” and image files could be ”.jpeg, .tiff, .gif or bitmap and many more. When you name images and save them you must not use any spaces in the file name. Example would be “photoofme.jpg” not “photo of me”.

The reason we do not have spaces in the names of images or web documents is because not all Internet browsers can read spaces. Internet Explorer can read spaces in images but Netscape Navigator cannot. Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing software but other do exist. Lets continue with our free basic computer skills training on Trojam horse: When a Trojan is activated, numerous things can happen.  Some Trojans are more annoying than malicious.  Some of the less annoying Trojans may choose to change your desktop settings or add silly desktop icons.  The more serious Trojans can erase or overwrite data on your computer, corrupt files, spread other malware such as viruses, spy on the user of a computer and secretly report data like browsing habits to other people, log keystrokes to steal information such as passwords and credit card numbers, phish for bank account details (which can be used for criminal activities), and even install a back door into your computer system so that they can come and go as they please.

To increase your odds of not encountering a Trojan, follow these simple guidelines:

1. Remain diligent Trojans can infect your computer through rogue websites, instant messaging, and emails with attachments.  Do not download anything into your computer unless you are 100 percent sure of its sender or source.

2. Ensure that your operating system is always up-to-date.  If you are running a Microsoft Windows operating system, this is essential.

3. Install reliable anti-virus software.  It is also important that you download any updates frequently to catch all new Trojan Horses, viruses, and worms.  Be sure that the anti-virus program that you choose can also scan e-mails and files downloaded through the internet.

4. Consider installing a firewall.  A firewall is a system that prevents unauthorized use and access to your computer.  A firewall is not going to eliminate your computer virus problems, but when used in conjunction with regular operating system updates and reliable anti-virus software, it can provide additional security and protection for your computer. Nothing can guarantee the security of your computer 100 percent. However, you can continue to improve your computer’s security and decrease the possibility of infection of  Trojam Horse by consistently following these guidelines.
